On July 4, 1997 the Mars robotic rover Sojoumer first rolled onto the Martian surface sparking a renewed interest in Martian exploration. Using tires as a metaphor, Chakaia
Booker used cut rubber as a kind of track surrounding her relief of the Martian surface.
The artist aimed to capture the gritty texture of the Martian landscape through the use of metal, bone and recycled fibrous materials.
