On July 4, 1997
the Mars robotic rover Sojoumer first rolled onto the Martian
surface sparking a renewed interest in Martian exploration. Using
tires as a metaphor, Chakaia
Booker used cut rubber as a kind of track surrounding her relief
of the Martian surface.
The artist aimed to capture the gritty texture of the Martian
landscape through the use of metal, bone and recycled fibrous
materials.
